Bobby, Hank, and Peggy Hill. Fox Broadcasting/Photofest © Fox Broadcasting
Occupation: Housewife; substitute teacher at Arlen High School and Tom Landry Middle School; reporter for the Arlen Bystander; agent with Seizemore Realty; proprietor of Sugarfoot’s Barbecue Restaurant; customer service representative for Alamo Beer.
Favorite Pastime: Playing Boggle (won the Texas State Boggle Championship).
Character: A kind and gentle person who is completely devoted to her family; believes people can do anything if they make a commitment. If she becomes tense, she suffers from headaches.
Blood Type: AB-negative.
Sports: Member of the Lady Giants softball team.
Award: Won “Substitute Teacher of the Year” three times in a row.
Car License Plate: 416 2AS.
LUANNE LEANNE PLATTER
Relationship: Peggy’s niece (the daughter of Hoyt and Leanne Platter).
Character: A very sweet young woman who came to live with Hank and Peggy when her alcoholic mother was jailed for stabbing her father with a fork during an argument and their trailer was repossessed. Peggy sees her as the daughter she never had; Hank first sees her as a bother, then as a vulnerable woman who is just looking to be with a loving family; Bobby looks on her as his sister rather than a cousin (he considers her “the coolest person I know”).
Attributes: Blonde and busty and considered a very beautiful woman.
Religion: Christian. When religion became a big part of her life, she became what she calls “a born-again virgin” and taught her own Bible study class. When she faces a tough situation, she always tells herself, “What would Jesus do?”
Dream: To become a beautician (specifically a Hollywood makeup artist). She attends the Arlen Beauty Academy, then Arlen Community College (an unspecified major). She drops out (poor grades) to work at the La Grunta Hotel (serving drinks), then as a hairstylist at the salon Hottyz.
Entertainer: Known as “Luanne and the Manger Babies.” Luanne found a box of sock puppets at a garage sale and created a Christian-themed puppet show that told the story of the animals who witnessed the birth of Christ. She was hired by Arlen TV Channel 84 to perform her show for children (but was canceled when she changed the theme to a gangster-based saga).
Husband: Lucky Kleinschmidt, a lazy 38-year-old who fakes accidents to acquire money by suing. They become the parents of Gracie, a girl who most resembles Luanne.
DALE ALVIN GRIBBLE
Dale, Hank’s best friend and neighbor, was born in Texas in 1949. He is married to Nancy (a TV reporter for Channel 84) and the father of Joseph (although he is unaware that Joseph is the result of an affair that Nancy had with his neighbor John Redcorn). Dale, the owner of an extermination company (Dale’s Dead Bug), has been smoking Manitoba cigarettes since the third grade and uses a Zippo lighter, drinks Alamo Beer, and is not only paranoid but also a hunter, gun fanatic, and believer in urban legends and conspiracy theories. He drives a white Dodge Caravan (that he calls “The Bug-e-bago”) that is distinguished by a large plastic queen ant on the roof and has the license plate LXD 352.
